ELA calls for mobilization against cuts in pensions and for the repeal of the labor reform

With the possibility of a general strike on the table, ELA has announced the call, for next October 24, of demonstrations in Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, San Sebastián and Pamplona, under the slogan ‘Don’t sell us in Madrid. No to cutting pensions. Repeal the labor reform ‘.

ELA has announced the call, for the next day October 24th, from mobilizations in Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, San Sebastián and Iruña, under the motto Do not sell us in Madrid. No to cutting pensions. Repeal the labor reform. The demonstrations will run from 11:30 hours the streets of the capitals of the South as announced today by the union’s general secretary, Mitxel Lakuntza, and the head of Strategic Planning, Leire Txakartegi.

The objective is none other than to mobilize the working class and pressure the political parties, specifically to PNV, EH Bildu and Podemos, to commit not to approve any cuts in pensions and to defend the repeal of the labor reform, since, according to ELA “the new labor reform aims to maintain the most harmful elements imposed by Zapatero (2010) and Rajoy (2012)”.

ELA recalls that these reforms need to be approved in Congress by a majority, and warns that “today that group of pro-independence and nationalist parties called the ‘governance bloc’ can prevent pension cuts and condition the labor reform.”

He believes that, at the moment, “said parties can exercise a sovereign principle such as decision-making capacity” since, although, according to ELA, “unfortunately, these decisions are still approved in Madrid”, the union sees options to “condition those reforms from the Basque Country “.

For this reason, ELA has approached the PNV, EH Bildu and Podemos “although the latter is a force of the State” so that they commit themselves not to approve any cuts in pensions and to defend the repeal of the labor reform. “However, the silence of these parties on such serious reforms is very disturbing,” he laments.

He adds that it is now crucial to know the content, the orientation and the dates in which they intend to approve these reforms. ELA assures that it will do everything possible to condition them and addresses the possibility of a general strike.

Union spokespersons insist that “the conditions of thousands of workers depend on how the reforms end, which today can be stopped and conditioned.” For this reason, ELA calls on “the entire working class” to take to the streets on October 24.
