Sales of electric vehicles reach a record, but incentives are urgently needed

During 2023, the sale of electrified vehicles reached a growth of 67.3% compared to 2022, after a total of 4,484 units were sold, reported from the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP).

According to Alberto Morisaki, manager of Economic Studies and Statistics of the AAP, It is the highest record they have to date and gives rise to the State encouraging the participation of the private sector to boost these cars, which are characterized by their reduced or no emission of polluting particles.

Greater awareness of the Peruvian buyer

Morisaki specifies that the local buyer has taken more interest in contributing to the care of the environment, and they are betting on these vehicles since they also generate significant savings in fuel use and maintenance.

However, its penetration is still negligible and has a rate of 2.5%. That is, for every 100 cars light and heavy vehicles that are sold, only 2.5 are electrified. These numbers distance us from other countries in the region.

It is necessary for the State to get involved in a more decisive way in the expansion of sales of the aforementioned vehicles, taking into account the positive impacts on society that the renewal of the park brings automotivetowards a more environmentally responsible one,” he commented.

In his opinion, lower tax burdens and lower tariffs should be established to encourage the entry of these goods, just as Colombia did, which in 2023 closed with 31,500 units sold: seven times more than Peru and with a penetration rate of 17% .

Looking ahead to 2024, Morisaki is optimistic and hopes that our market grow by double digits, although it will depend on the political will to take action in the short and medium term.
