Alex Contreras steps back and will remain in charge of the MEF

You would run. After meeting with President Dina Boluarte at the Government Palace, the minister Alex Contreras This afternoon he ruled out his resignation from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), despite earlier stating for various media outlets, including La República, that his departure from office was a decision made.

In a rather unusual day for the Executive, Minister Alex Contreras went from guaranteeing his resignation to conciliating, first, with Premier Alberto Otárola, and then receiving the final endorsement from the Head of State. Until he made sure he was not replaced by Luis Carranza or José Arista, the resignation letter, which the minister said he had ready, did not come out of his briefcase.

“I had a fairly productive meeting with the president, precisely taking stock of the year and along these lines we will continue to advance the objectives of this Government. One, the recovery of the economy, which for us is fundamental. In that sense it is good to start on the right foot, with good execution. And two, the issue of security, continuing to provide all the resources,” Contreras told the press upon leaving the Palace.

To clarify the scenario a little, during the early hours of the morning the head of the MEF said he had presented his resignation on site, arguing “lack of transparency in some decisions” (sic), according to sources close to The Republic.

However, the minister had all morning to recant or go to the media to clarify the information, but he preferred to wait for a counteroffer from the Executive before going on camera, exposing himself to more than one economist celebrating his decision along the way.
