In “19.30” he showed his father suffering from Alzheimer’s. The National Broadcasting Council initiated proceedings

Maciej Gąsiorowski from “19.30” made a material about Alzheimer’s disease in Wednesday’s program. This may cause problems – the National Broadcasting Council has initiated explanatory proceedings in this matter.

In line with the new line, Maciej Gąsiorowski asked many parties to comment on the material in “19.30” about Alzheimer’s disease. Viewers could listen not only to experts, but also to the sick themselves – including an elderly Mr. Ryszard, who was convinced that he was still 22 years old.

And this was the case that was supposed to raise doubts in the National Broadcasting Council. The Chairman of the Council ex officio ordered the initiation of explanatory proceedings.

Chairman Maciej Świrski announced on Twitter that the National Broadcasting Council will take a closer look at the reportage produced by Maciej Gąsiorowski as part of the “19.30” program. The point is to show the patient’s health condition without his or her informed consent:

I ordered the implementation of an ex officio investigation into this reportage in terms of violating the dignity of a sick person, disclosing the image and personal data. I will also contact the Ombudsman and the Ombudsman for Patients’ Rights on this matter – wrote Maciej Świrski on social media.

In Gąsiorowski’s material, Mr. Ryszard – regardless of his relationship with the creator of the reportage – clearly has problems with determining basic things. When asked about the year, he says it is 1997. Was he able to consciously consent to being included in the journalist’s material, which was later viewed by TV viewers all over Poland? These and other questions will be answered not only by the National Broadcasting Council, but also by the Ombudsmen asked for their opinion. The Code of Journalist Ethics, posted on TVP’s website, mentions taking care “not to offend people with physical or mental disabilities, the old and sick, those who are helpless in life” and about “not violating privacy and intimate spheres.” In the case of a person suffering from Alzheimer’s, an additional problem is the GDPR – the material disclosed sensitive medical data.
