FAO: world trade in berries will surpass that in bananas in 2022, with blueberries leading the way

Global trade in berries, among which blueberries stand out, surpassed that of bananas in 2021 and continued to maintain leadership in 2022 despite the drop in export volumes, reported the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ( FAO).

Andriy Yarmak, FAO economist, explained during the “Berry Market 2023” event, organized by the association of berry producers of Moldova, that exports of fresh and frozen berries at the end of 2022 generated income for exporters of US$13,700. millions

According to information collected by the Agraria.pe portal, berry trade grew at an average rate of 9.8%, that is, US$1.2 billion per year, significantly faster than the fruit category in general, which increased at an average rate. 4.3%, US$4.5 billion per year.

In the case of blueberries, one of Peru’s flagship export products, the share in global trade of fresh and frozen berries reached 34% in 2022. The trend could continue this year, although Peruvian supply has been hindered by El Niño.

For the first time in 2022, blueberries entered the top five products of the fruit sector in terms of export volumes, equaling oranges in sales revenue.

It should be noted that, in 2022, Peru was the world’s leading exporter of blueberries, for the fourth consecutive year, with US$1,362 million 740,000, surpassing the United States, Spain, Canada, the Netherlands and Morocco.
