Brussels agrees to reduce the hake quota in the Cantabrian Sea by 8%

It has decreased less than expected, since, in the initial proposal, the reduction was 18.5%.

The Fisheries Ministers of the European Union have reached this Tuesday an agreement on the fishing opportunities for the Community fleet in 2022, which includes a 8% cut in the catches of hake in the Cantabrian Sea. The Minister of Fisheries, Luis Planas, has assessed the agreement, taking into account that the initial proposal with the Commission was for a decrease of 18.5%.

In the annual negotiation of fishing quotas, Brussels has agreed what fish the arrantzales will be able to catch in 2022 and, above all, how much they will be able to catch.

The Bay of Biscay has registered for the third consecutive year a decrease in the number of hakes that can be caught by fishermen from Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Lapurdi.

As for the share of sole on the Portuguese coast, there has also been a decrease, although less, of 5%. And the share of chicharro, as expected, increased by 11.6%.

It should be noted, however, that there is still no agreement on the stock shared with the United Kingdom. The European Commission negotiates directly with London, so that Basque fishermen will have the option of catching more hake and cod.
