Vehicles sold between January and September this 2023 reached 102,727 counting new units and although this is 2% more than the same period in 2022, sales in the third quarter were not good as they had a 12% drop.

The Association of Automobile Companies of Ecuador (Aeade) reported that in this third quarter there were almost 4,500 fewer sales, as in the same period in 2022, 37,138 new vehicles were sold, and now 32,641. In September alone, the drop is 20%. In 2022, 13,358 units were sold during that month and 10,651 last month.

All segments of light vehicles fell in September: SUVs, cars and trucks, compared to September last year.

Despite these declines, the accumulated sales from January to September of these segments recorded an increase of about 2%.

In the case of commercial vehicles, there is also a significant drop of 27%, higher than that recorded in light vehicles, the union indicates. The truck segment was the most affected with a decrease of 30%, from 1139 units sold in September 2022 to 791 in September 2023. On the other hand, accumulated sales increased by 2.9%.

There is a greater demand for electrified vehicles and motorcycles

In contrast to the slowdown in gasoline vehicle sales, hybrid and electric vehicles have reached historic highs.

Last September, 1,091 electrified vehicles were sold, compared to 581 in the same month in 2022. This “represents a historical sales record for this type of technology,” Aeade points out.

Electrified vehicles have grown by 44% in sales and already have a 9% market share

So far in 2023, 8,364 electrified vehicles (hybrid and electric) have been sold, which puts them at an 8% share in total sales.

While in the case of motorcycles, the growth in demand on the Ecuadorian market is increasing. In September, 17,272 motorcycles were sold, which is a year-on-year increase of 10%.
