Increase in the minimum wage: how is the proposal going and why was the session of the National Labor Council suspended?

The increase in the minimum wage is still on hold after the announcement by President Dina Boluarte in her latest message to the nation. Despite the fact that the meeting of the representatives of trade unions and private companies in the reactivated National Labor Council was scheduled for Friday, August 25, said session had to be suspended. Next, find out the reason for what happened and what the workers think about the progress of this proposal.

Why was the session of the National Labor Council suspended?

On Thursday, July 13, the National Labor Council was reinstated after a suspension of more than a year following the withdrawal of the business sector. However, the session on August 25, announced by the Minister of Labor, Fernando Varela, had to be canceled at the last minute due to health problems of one of the members.

One of the central issues to be discussed at this meeting coordinated by the Confederation of Private Business Institutions (Confiera) was the increase in the minimum living wage and the proposals related to the labor code.

Increase in the minimum wage: when will the next session of the CNT be?

A rescheduling date for the session of the National Labor Council has not been defined. However, as reported, the new day will be communicated to the unions of workers as of next week.

“I could tell you that I believe that in the middle of the week we could have a meeting with the coordinators to establish the agenda and perhaps between Thursday and Friday we could be talking, with the intention of later rectifying it, of a second session of the National Labor Council”, said the head of the MTPE, Fernando Varela, in statements to the press.

For his part, the deputy secretary general of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP), Gustavo Minaya, said in statements to The Republic that, in addition to the increase in the RMV and the pensions for retirees of law 19990, it has been proposed to debate the labor code, which “must be sleeping in some folder of the Ministry of Labor.”

Increase in the minimum wage: what is the proposal of the unions?

For Gustavo Minaya, from the CGTP, the minimum wage should be progressively increased to cover the basic family basket, which is S/2,075, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

“The amount of the remuneration is S/1,025. What do businessmen and the government want to tell us? That each person in the family unit has to live or subsist or survive with 6.90 soles a day. That is extremely illogical ”, he maintained in previous statements to The Republic.

Likewise, Julio César Bazán, president of the Unitary Confederation of Workers of Peru (CUT Peru), told this medium that it is unlikely that the president’s announcement will materialize in the short term and that business unions do not prioritize the issue on the agenda of the National Labor Council.

“We have recently raised the need for a minimal increase of a first tranche to S/1,500 and the application of an apportionment so that in five years the value of the basic basket can be reached,” he said.
