Government will raise the minimum pension of the ONP to S/600

With information from URPI-LR.

Alex Contrerashead of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), detailed this Friday that the minimum pension in the ONP will be increased, which will go from S/500 to S/600.

The announcement was made by President Dina Boluarte in order to benefit more than 600,000 pensioners of DL19990.

“There will be an increase in remuneration because at this stage of adulthood, which is the most difficult, we need more support,” the head of state emphasized.

For his part, Contreras announced that the modification of the minimum pension in the ONP requires a law, for which reason they will send a project to Congress for validation.

“In the pension reform project that we are going to send to Congress, we will include this proposal to raise the minimum pension from S/500 to S/600 and it can be executed at the beginning of 2024”the official added.

According to Minister Contreras, the increase in the minimum pension in the ONP comes in a context where the family economy suffers the ravages of inflation by losing its purchasing power in order to “restore dignity to retirees.”

Increase in pensions in ONP: a “priority” at a snail’s pace

At the beginning of the year, Alberto Otárola, president of the Council of Ministers, declared in his investiture speech before Congress that one of the government’s priorities was going to be to increase the pensions of the ONP.

After what was said this Friday, August 25 by Dina Boluarte and Alex Contreras, it took eight months for there to be concrete signs.

As reported by La República, from the National Central of Retirees and Pensioners of Peru (Cenajupe) they were waiting for the announcement since until the middle of the year, there was no approach or willingness of the government to listen to their request.
