According to the latest report of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), during the quarter of May, June and July, adequate employment in Metropolitan Lima fell by -3.3%, which represents a drop of 103,600 jobs in relation to the pre-pandemic. The data also reflect an increase in inappropriate employment among men, with 3.9%, and 2.2% among women.
Likewise, the levels of underemployment, that which is carried out in precarious conditions, increased by 23.9%, which represents 418,800 citizens, compared to 2019. In detail, underemployment by income, in relation to the same period of time, increased at 55.2%. Which means that almost twice as many people, 616,100 more, receive less than the minimum wage compared to three years ago.
For its part, underemployment due to insufficient hours fell by -30.9% (-197,400).

Rates of unemployment have reached 6.3%, rreflecting a significant increase of 11.4% relative to the pre-pandemic period. This trend translates into an 11.8% increase in the male unemployment rate (18,100 people) and a 10.9% increase in the female unemployment rate (17,500 people). For the month of July, it was estimated that approximately 349,100 citizens found themselves unemployed.
In the last quarter of the year, of the total unemployed population, 51% (178,100 people) are women and 49% (171,000 people) are men.
The report also highlights that “the female unemployment rate stood at 6.9%, being 1.2 percentage points more than the male unemployment rate (5.7%).”
