The work carried out underground by the Chinese company Cosco Shipping stopped on May 16 when it crossed under an area where the houses had been cemented with fillings, according to first indications. Now, Congresswoman Vivian Olivos, of people forcehas demanded the creation of a special group to follow the case.

Cosco Shipping He said he was not against this measure, but rather “initiating a political persecution without even having the official expertise” of the College of Engineers of Peru (CIP). They have even appeared as guests before other commissions, such as Control and Transport and Communications.

“Both the local authorities and the residents who have suffered the impact agree with the company’s response. This desire is not understood,” says Rómulo Zarauz, the company’s Social Responsibility manager.

There are more than US$1,300 million that is risked in this first stage of the megaport, which has an advance of 43%. Up to the time of the sinking, more than US$545 million of the total investment had been used. The final cost is US$3.5 billion.

The section of the tunnel —which was dug from both ends— corresponds to the company China Railway Engineering Group (CREC) No. 10. The idea was that the trucks do not cross from the South Pan American to the terminal in the middle of the houses, leaving a cloud of dust behind.

The project was to be delivered in December 2024 and the Chinese president himself, Xi Jinping, was expected to inaugurate it during the APEC summit to be held in our country, according to Cosco Shipping. However, the collapse and parliamentary meddling could cause it to be delayed for at least a quarter.

“The megaport is a symbol for Peru to be seen not only as a member of APEC, but as a protagonist of the Pacific Alliance,” added Zarauz.

In total, 16 families were affected by land subsidence, four of which directly suffered damage to their homes. For the latter, the company has granted a repair of between S/50,000 and S/60,000, not counting the reconstruction.
