The political leadership of the region is in question, the place to fill it is empty. What the triumvirate of Hugo Chávez, Rafael Correa and Evo Morales was once able to do, the new leaders of the left failed, and that’s not exactly due to lack of interest. The “promises” of the Spanish-speaking New Left have failed to consolidate the design of the route to follow.

democracy in crisis

The freshest ones, like Petr and Borić, wished for this goal, but they are preoccupied with internal problems. The Colombian president has had water up to his throat for a couple of weeks now. Instability in his cabinet, recent accusations of illegal financing of his campaign and the collapse of key reforms for his administration are not allowing him to part with his country. On the other hand, Gabriel Borić faces something similar due to the overwhelming reality of a president with an inexperienced government that is becoming known for “unforced mistakes”.

An age of despair

There is no death in politics. This applies to both living and dead characters. When it seems that the political career is over, it is revived by electoral oblivion. And whoever is truly dead can be reborn and become a timeless legend. For example, Bolívar, Alfaro and Allende. For this reason, the possibility of a leadership of leftist Latin American leaders emerging to fill the large vacancy cannot be ruled out.

There is someone in this race who is running with no apparent interest and taking a seat that doesn’t seem to be asking for it.

Educational guide against authoritarianism (II)

El Salvador was a country known for the violence of its guerrillas, and in recent years that image has changed. The propaganda of its first president, Nayib Bukele, penetrated deeply into Latin America. And how? From Mexico to Chile, the violence of organized crime has spread and is terrorizing millions, while the leaders of nations seem to have no control over what is happening.

There is no death in politics. This applies to both living and dead characters.

Faced with this, they compare Bukele’s viral statements to the plans of international organizations adored by many leftist leaders, videos of prisons in El Salvador, despite the fact that they look like concentration camps, and more. The effectiveness of Bukele’s propaganda has forced many societies on the continent to start looking for their Creole version of the Salvadoran president. The political comparison has not yet been outlined, the fertile field for his arrival exists and is growing.

Democracy or electoralism?

Those seeking regional leadership brag about taking photos on peaks that mean nothing. They do little to unify regional representation, to create integration where economic boundaries for regional goods and services are null, or at least so that there is constant cooperation on security issues. This contrasts with Bukele’s strategy, which feeds his reputation for achieving goals, even if it involves violating the rule of law.

The Salvadoran president does not want to win the hearts of politicians with big summit meetings, but he is winning the hearts of millions of voters who are willing to sacrifice parts of their democracy for a little security. If Bukeles is replicated in the region, his figure will be confirmed and he will end up being, with his personality or his style, the one to fill the big vacancy. (OR)
