There are about a million and a half ninis in Peru, according to CCL

During 2022, there were close to a million and a half young people between the ages of 15 and 29 who neither study nor work (nini), 5% less than the previous year. However, this result is above the historical average of 1.3 million, This was reported by the Institute of Economics and Business Development (Iedep) of the Lima Chamber of Commerce.

“This population tends to aggravate income disparity, reduces job performance, endangering progress in social mobility and the fight against poverty. In addition, having a high rate of ninisthere is a risk that young people will choose to commit crimes or promote markets for illegal products”, warned the head of the Iedep of the CCL, Óscar Chávez.

In 2020, the year of the pandemic, the number of young people inactive in work and education showed a growth of 63.8% compared to 2019, according to the National Household Survey (Enaho) and the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). .

“But if we compare the nini population of 2021, it registered a drop of 29.3% in contrast to 2020. This is due to the easing of the restrictions imposed by the Government to face the pandemic, the statistical rebound of the Peruvian economy in the 2021 and the low growth of 2022”, Chávez stressed.

61% of ninis are women

The nini condition is mostly present in women (61.2%) and in 2022 it was close to the historical average (63.3%). This responds to the fact that they are mothers at an early age and must take care of their children. However, during the 2020 health crisis, this rate was 57%, while that of men stood at 43%.

Likewise, poverty in 2022 affected 31.2% of ninis, a figure 10 percentage points higher than the pre-pandemic historical average. “This reduces the chances that they will get out of such a condition by their own means and will require support through public policies,” explained the specialist.

Regarding the age range, 61.2% of ninis are young people between 15 and 22 years old, percentage that is in the historical average prior to the pandemic. Regarding internet access, 67.7% of this segment has this service, a very high figure compared to the 30.7% registered in the pre-pandemic year (30.7%).
