Peru and Indonesia will begin negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement

He Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) announced that it The negotiation of a trade agreement between Peru and Indonesia will begin after the meeting between the head of the portfolio, Juan Carlos Mathews, and the Indonesian Minister of Commerce, Zulkifli Hasan.

“We have completed the work that allows us to start negotiations for a trade agreement with Indonesia, which will allow Peruvian companies to have preferential conditions to promote the shipment of their products to this Asian market, which will help to continue positioning quality of Peruvian products abroad”, Mathews specified, within the framework of the 2023 APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade meeting, which takes place in Detroit, United States.

Both ministers also agreed that a date would be set for the start of the Free Trade Agreement. Mathews highlighted Peru’s interest in starting negotiations in the short term.

Only in 2022, Peruvian shipments to Indonesia reached US$83 million, an increase of 14.6% compared to 2021. In detail, 96% corresponds to non-traditional products, among which agricultural shipments stand out, such as cocoa in grain, grapes, pomegranates, Brazil nuts, tara, quinoa and chia. For its part, in mining, shipments totaled US$24 million, especially for calcium, anthracite and zinc phosphates. In the fishing sector, fish meal and squid were sent. Finally, in textiles, cotton clothing such as shirts and t-shirts stand out.

In total, in 2022 they exported 356 different Peruvian products to Indonesia, a growth of 495% compared to the previous year.

Indonesia is Peru’s tenth largest trading partner in Asia and represents a market of more than 273 million inhabitants, in which approximately 52 million correspond to the middle class, who would be the potential consumers of Peruvian goods or services.
