Hungary will ban until June 30 the import of grains and other agricultural products from Ukraine to protect the interests of local producers, reported the official MTI news agency this Sunday, April 16.
“Current market trends could cause such serious damage to Hungarian agriculture that extraordinary measures must be taken to prevent it,” Minister István Nagy said in a statement last night, citing low import prices from neighboring Ukraine.
The minister added that the European Union (EU) should take measures and rethink the corridors of solidarity, that is, a balanced distribution of Ukrainian products among the community countries. The time limitation should, according to the official statement, be enough to take lasting measures in the EU and thus find a solution to the problem.
Poland also announced this Saturday a temporary ban against imports of grain and dozens of other agricultural products from Ukraine. Other Eastern European countries, such as Bulgaria and Romania have also asked Brussels for a solution, since its producers cannot compete with Ukrainian prices.
