The second runway of the Jorge Chavez International Airportunder the monitoring of the new control tower, received its first two flight operations this Monday, April 3.
In an inaugural ceremony, led by the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, together with the Minister of Transport and Communications, Paola Lazarte, the first commercial plane to the city of Tarapoto took off with 140 passengers from the Star Peru airline; as well as the first landing of a plane from the Peruvian Air Force in the new infrastructure.
“Now, we have the third airport in Latin America with two runways of independent operations, opening opportunities for tourism and economic growth, for the benefit of Peruvians,” said Lazarte through his social networks.
This achievement is the result of the joint and articulated work between the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (Corpac), the concessionaire Lima Airport Partners (LAP) and the aeronautical community in general, under the supervision of Ositran.
On April 1, the MTC, through the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics, signed the directorial resolution authorizing the operation of the new airport infrastructure.
“This mega-project will bring multiple social and economic benefits to our country. It is an important step that leads us to become one of the main air connections on the continent. Today, we are part of history, let us be aware of it, for a united and developing Peru,” said Minister Lazarte.
Now, these successful operations show that the infrastructure, which is part of the Jorge Chávez airport expansion megaproject, is in optimal condition. It is important to specify that the continuity of operations will be carried out progressively, that is, flights and air traffic control will be scheduled periodically, to guarantee an efficient and safe operational transition.
The total investment for the expansion of the airport amounts to US$ 2,000 million, a sum that also includes the construction of a new passenger terminal. This amount is executed by private funds through LAP, in compliance with its contractual obligations with the Peruvian State.
One of the benefits of having two landing strips is that, in the event of a contingency occurring on the first runway, the use of the second infrastructure will be immediately activated, with which it will not be necessary to divert flights to nearby airports.
