March inflation was 1.25% in Metropolitan Lima, the highest in a year

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) – an indicator that measures inflation – in Metropolitan Lima reached 1.25% in March, the highest in a year, achieving an accumulated variation of 1.77% at the end of the first quarter of 2023 , reported the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

The increase in inflation in the third month of the year was driven by the increase in prices observed in the consumer divisions: education (4.79%), food and non-alcoholic beverages (2.79%) and restaurants and hotels (0.72%). To a lesser extent, prices of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics (0.50%), miscellaneous goods and services (0.41%), clothing and footwear (0.41%), recreation and culture (0.27%), health (0.26%), furniture, household items and ordinary household maintenance (0.20%) and communications (0.01%).

On the contrary, the prices of the divisions decreased Transport (-0.12%) and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (-0.08%).

Core inflation was 0.88% in the capital

The CPI of Metropolitan Lima, without considering the most volatile products, such as food prices and energy products, presented a variation of only 0.88% in March 2023.

Among the excluded products are food and beverages consumed inside and outside the home (1.93%), gasoline and lubricants (-1.66%), domestic propane gas (0.79%), solid fuels (0.08% ), natural gas for housing (-0.02%), and residential electricity (-0.50%).

National inflation reached 1.19%

In March 2023, the Consumer Price Index at the national level rose by 1.19%, two divisions showed growth above the national average: Education 4.76% and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages at 2.32%.

While, below the national average, restaurants and hotels were located with 0.90%, miscellaneous goods and services 0.52%, clothing and footwear 0.52%, furniture, household items and conservation of the housing 0.37%, alcoholic beverages and tobacco 0.34%, health 0.31%, recreation and culture 0.28% and to a lesser extent communications 0.01%.
