Miske – a drink originating from the Andean corridor – already has its own designation of origin, becoming the seventh product from Ecuador with this certificate.

Ten provinces are involved in the production of this drink: Pichincha, Carchi, Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Tungurahua, Bolívar, Cañar, Azuay, Loja and Imbabura.

Miske, distilled from penca, among the products claiming the designation of origin in Ecuador

The achievement is the Association of Production Chains Penco and Cabuya from Ecuador (Anagavec), indicated by the Ministry of Production, which made the announcement this week. The declaration of the name of origin of the Ecuadorian misque materialized after three years of monitoring and advising this association by the Monitoring Commission of the Interinstitutional System for the Promotion and Protection of Names of Origin and Geographical Indications of Ecuador, chaired by the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries.

That state portfolio reported that through this process, “miske will be positioned as a product originating from the inter-Andean corridor, whose quality, reputation and other characteristics are solely due to the geographical environment in which it is produced, including natural and human factors.” . This is an Ecuadorian alcoholic drink obtained by distilling tzawarmishky (penco sap).

Just as in the world France has a designation of origin for its Champagne for the region of the same name, Italy for its Parmesan cheese for the Parma region and Mexico for its Tequila, Ecuador has six other designations of origin for:

The last four achieved the recognition of the protection of the mark of origin for the European market.

Now the Ministry of Production will motivate the recognition of the protection for the European and British market of the Denomination of Origin of Miske. The management will give greater impetus and product promotion, which will especially benefit small producers.

The announcement was completed by presenting a guide so that interested parties know the steps they must follow and the characteristics a product must have to obtain a Denomination of Origin, “so that more products can benefit from this type of Intellectual Property Rights”.

Designation of origin is a distinguishing mark that identifies a product as originating in a country or in a region or locality of the national territory, when its quality, reputation or other characteristic can be attributed primarily to its geographical origin, taking into account, in addition, other natural and human factors which affect the characterization of the product.

It is not a brand; that is, it does not grant a private right of use nor is it a mechanism for excluding other manufacturers. Any person who meets the conditions set out in the specifications can use the Mark of Origin.

Recognition is what brings benefits, especially for small producers.
