Counter-Strike 2 is finally official. Valve confirms continuation and publishes videos

It happened. After many months of unofficial premises and guesses of the community about the potential successor to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Valve officially confirmed the existence of Counter-Strike 2. The series of popular online FPS games will see its latest installment in the summer of 2023, and Limited beta testing is already underway.

The series of multiplayer games dedicated to the clashes between counter-terrorists and terrorists, existing since 1999, will see a new part this summer. For many months, members of the popular CS community have been looking for traces of the upcoming Counter-Strike 2 in the game files.

Initially, a major update was suspected to transfer Counter-Strike Global Offensive, the previous part of online shooters, to the Source 2 engine by the game’s publisher, Valve. These suspicions arose due to a similar move that the American company made in relation to its other popular MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) game, DOTA 2, where no new part was announced, but a major update was introduced, in which the game was moved to the second generation of the Source engine.

Counter-Strike 2 is coming. Launching in summer 2023. Beta testing is underway

In recent weeks, there have been reports of the upcoming Counter-Strike 2, which was mentioned in CS:GO source files and in applications to the US Patent Office. Finally, Valve today announced the start of early tests of the new Counter-Strike, the full and final version of which is due out this summer. For now, players selected by the company receive access to CS 2 beta tests. Valve will successively grant access to the tests to other players.

Testing takes place only on the Windows platform. At the moment, there are two game modes available: Deathmatch and Tournament Match in unranked mode. Players can play matches on Dust 2, the most popular arena in the entire Counter-Strike series. In addition, CS:GO items such as weapon skins or player character skins are already available in the game.

CS2 in the summer of 2023. Valve is already announcing news

With the arrival of CS 2, Valve announced some news related to the premiere of the new part on a new graphics engine. In addition to changes in the audiovisual setting, which are noticeable in the videos provided by the developer, the creators will make changes to all arenas available in CS:GO. They will be transferred to the new part with changes of various scale – from simple adaptation to the new “map” graphics, refreshing the aesthetics without major changes, to a complete reconstruction of the arena.

Some game mechanics will also be changed. Valve presented the changed functions of smoke grenades, available in all previous installments. From now on, the popular “smokes” will be real 3D objects, visible in the same form to all meeting participants. The range of interactions with the smoke cloud will also be expanded, which can be influenced by all available weapons and grenades, and the “smokes” themselves will react to lighting and the space in which they are used.

Valve also presented changes in the technical aspects of the game, focusing on the servers where matches are played. So far, the servers on which the previous views operated operated in “separate time intervals”, popularly known as “tick-rates”. Within these ranges, the servers tracked any activity that players were carrying out, including shots fired and moves made. However, there were short gaps between tick-rates where the game could misread things, such as a shot taken. In CS 2, new solutions will be introduced that will eliminate the gaps between the intervals.

For now, the company has not provided any new information related to Counter-Strike 2. Further news will be successively revealed by Valve until the game’s release.
