To do this, they plan to take advantage of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second semester. The objective would be to give visibility to the Atlantic region in which the different levels of government participate on an equal footing: European Union, Member States, Communities and Regions.

Euskadi, Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria have claimed the creation of a Atlantic Macroregion to promote the Atlantic Axis. Thus, Lehendakari Urkullu and the presidents of the other three communities have proposed the creation of a work and meeting forum that articulates, unites and gives visibility to the Atlantic region and in which the different levels of government participate on a standing equality: European Union, Member States, Communities and Regions.
As explained by Urkullu, the objective is that, during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the Union, in the second half of this yearthe European Council mandates the Commission to develop a Macroregional Strategy for the Atlantic.

The meeting addressed issues related to rail connections between the Iberian Peninsula and the European continent through the Atlantic area, as well as other issues related to the different transitions such as energy, digital or sociodemographic.
The meeting was convened by Urkullu in his capacity as president of the Atlantic Arc, and was attended by the presidents Alfonso Rueda (Galicia), Adrián Barbón (Asturias) and Miguel Ángel Revilla (Cantabria).
