An Adif error has led Renfe to commission the Basque company CAF to build trains that do not fit in the tunnels of Cantabria and Asturias. Due to this error, detected by CAF itself, the manufacture of the new fleet will suffer a delay of between two and three years, until this issue is resolved.

Renfe published in January 2019 the specifications for the acquisition of 31 metric gauge trains in accordance with the gauges included in the Adif network statement and, in June 2020, awarded CAF their manufacture, after a bidding process that was affected by the pandemic.

After CAF detected that, with the measures published in the network statement, the trains would not fit in certain sections of the infrastructure, the entire start-up manufacturing process was stopped and the search for the best possible solution began, according to a report. Adif, Renfe and the State Railway Safety Agency (AESF). The total volume of the operation was for CAF above 250 million euros.

In this context, the Secretary General for Infrastructure of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Xavier Flores, has acknowledged that there has been “a problem” in the size of the commuter trains committed to Cantabria and Asturias, and has assured that Renfe It is already working with CAF to have the new trains available “as soon as possible”.

In this sense, he explained that the Feve line, the company that previously managed the lines now affected, is “very special”, it has “smaller than usual” tunnels, which meant that these new trains that were being modernized “It would cause us to have smaller trains or with not the same conditions that we currently have.”

Flores has indicated that in the end “a new comparative method” has been chosen, which consists of using a train that currently runs on the metric gauge lines as a reference. For this, CAF is going to hire a company specialized in its application and in adapting the project to the result of the analysis.
