UNP awarded the Eugenio Espejo 2022 national journalism awards

The National Union of Journalists (UNP), when commemorating 83 years of institutional life, awarded the Eugenio Espejo 2022 national journalism prize, although this year two national prizes were awarded for the relevance of the topics and which were published in THE UNIVERSE newspaper and in the GATOPARDO magazine, Mexico.

The ceremony for the eighty-third anniversary of the UNP was held at the Gonzalo Bonilla theater of the institution, which brings together journalists and social communicators from the country.

Its president, Cristóbal Peñafiel, He highlighted the work carried out by the press in the country, which despite the adversities continues the efforts of journalists to show the reality of the country, tell the stories and denounce corruption.

When presenting his work report, he stressed the defense of the institution in the face of political intentions to approve reforms to the Communication Law with the purpose of restricting the right to free expression, but that after a presidential veto it was possible to prevent the establishment of the censorship.

The vice president of the UNP and president of the Eugenio Espejo Awards Commission, Yohanna Piedra Costales, was in charge of showing the results of the contest that brought together 31 journalistic works and highlighted that the decisions made were unanimous.

The jury was made up of: Gonzalo Ruiz, Juan Carlos Calderón, Byron Rodríguez, Christian Espinosa and Patricia Sandoval, who took into account aspects such as journalistic technique, formats, quality, depth, impact, creativity and innovation.

The Eugenio Espejo national journalism award, 2022 edition, was received by: Mónica Almeida and Paúl Mena, journalists from the newspaper EL UNIVERSO, who presented their work in the investigation category entitled “The case of Antonio Peré, the articulator of the Petroecuador bribes” .

Also as Eugenio Espejo national journalism award, 2022 edition, it was obtained by Alexis Serrano, for his chronicle in the press published in the magazine Gato Pardo – México, with the title “The border that does not exist. The story of two cities Aguas Verdes and Huaquillas”.

In the Audiovisual category, he received the Ana María Cañizares and her team of CNN journalists award for the documentary Galápagos between danger and hope.

The award in the Television Interview category was won by Carlos Rojas and his team of journalists, which is broadcast on Ecuavisa in the Politically Correct program, with the title: Council of the Judiciary, a political trial.

In the Digital Media Interview category, he received the Miguel Romero Flores award, for the interview with Ramiro Ávila, in the Parafasis program on Radio Voz Andina Internacional on the Simón Bolívar Andean University radio station.

In the Television Report category, the following received the award: William Yong, Bessy Granja and their work team with the theme Migration, dream or nightmare broadcast on Ecuavisa.

In the Investigation category, the following received the award: Mónica Almeida and Paúl Mena, for their journalistic work entitled “the case of Antonio Peré, the articulator of the Petroecuador bribes”, published in THE UNIVERSE newspaper.

In the Institutional Communication category, Magaly Ayala and her team from the National Comptroller’s Office received the award.

In the Chronicle in the Press category, journalist Alexis Serrano received the award for his work entitled: The border that does not exist. The story of two cities Aguas Verdes and Huaquillas, published in the Mexican magazine Gatopardo.

Gabriela Verdesoto, received the award in the Digital Media Reporting category, for her work “Shigucocha is living next to the corpse of a river”, published in La Barra Espaciadora.

Honorable mentions

At the awards evening for the journalistic works of the 2022 edition, the National Union of Journalists also awarded honorable mentions.

In the Reporting on Television category, it went to Andrea Báez and her team, for the coverage of the flood of La Gasca, broadcast live on the morning broadcast of Ecuavisa.

The honorable mention in the Digital Media Research category was received by Marjorie Ortiz and Sandra Miranda, journalists from newspaper THE UNIVERSEfor his work called: “The corruption for which the IESS is dying.”

Ana Minga also received an honorable mention for her research work entitled: “Deforestation, hunting and dredging came to the living jungle, published in the digital magazine Plan V.

Similarly, in the Digital Media Research category, Alina Manrique received an honorable mention for her work “Police crimes. The inefficient purification in Ecuador”, published in TC Digital, La República and GK.

Karol Noroña, received an honorable mention in the Chronicle category, for his journalistic work entitled “The invisible children of coca”, published on the GK Ecuador portal.

Mariela Rosero, also received an honorable mention in the Digital Media Reporting category, for her work “Volunteers offer health services to trans people in Ecuador, published in La Periódica.

In the same category, an honorable mention was awarded to Jorge Cano and his work team, for the coverage of the national strike of June 2022 broadcast in the Wuambra community media.

And the honorable mention in the Cartoon category went to Kléber Moreno, for his cartoon alluding to the issue of the femicide of María Belén Bernal at the facilities of the General Alberto Enríquez Gallo National Police School. (YO)
