The National Superintendency of Public Records (Sunarp) reported that, between January and October of this year, a total of 1,024 eco-friendly vehicles sold in Peru were registered, a growth of 144.39% compared to the same period in 2020. With this, the thousand units sold in the same period in our country were exceeded for the first time.
Given this, the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP) specified that, in October alone, 111 eco-friendly vehicles were sold -between hybrids and electric-, a result that meant 56.34% more than the volume sold in the same month of 2020.
“2021 will be the best year in history for these vehicles. We expect sales to close above 1,200 units ”, remarked Alberto Morisaki, manager of Economic Studies at the AAP.
When disaggregating the information by type of technology, it is observed that the best-selling electrified vehicles between January and October 2021 were conventional hybrids or HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicle), with 956 units; followed by plug-in hybrids or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) with 41 units and further behind are pure electric or BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), with 27 units.
This increase in the sale of new eco-friendly vehicles has boosted the percentage of penetration of these vehicles in the market. Thus, as of October of this year, its participation in the total number of vehicles sold was 0.73%, above the 0.46% in 2020 and 0.22% in 2019.
AAP: sale of eco-friendly vehicles in Peru
However, Morisaki noted that, despite this growth in the local market, the size of eco-friendly vehicle sales “is still considerably smaller when compared to our neighbors in the region,” such as Colombia.
“In October alone, 2,351 clean technology vehicles were sold in the coffee country, while total sales in the first ten months of 2021 reached 13,554 units, 13 times more than in the Peruvian market,” said the specialist.
The reasons, he said, that explain the larger size of the Colombian market compared to the Peruvian one are diverse. However, the specialist highlights the lower tax burden on the sale of these vehicles, various import tariff benefits, and other advantages such as the possibility of being exempt from certain policies regarding vehicle mobility, such as pick and plate.
“The boost and government support received by this growing market in Colombia is part of a much larger plan that seeks to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions and make it a carbon neutral country,” explained the representative of the AAP .
AAP: Why use eco-friendly vehicles?
It is vital that our country make environmental commitments that help reduce the current level of pollution that plagues our cities. One of them should be the modernization of its vehicle fleet, more efficient and less polluting, a goal that could be achieved with a greater income from electrified vehicles.
In this way, a sustainable development of transport is promoted, bringing various benefits to its users (fuel savings, lower maintenance costs) and to society in general (lower pollution, lower probability of traffic accidents due to its higher safety and reliability standards, among others).
Precisely, the AAP has presented a few months ago a proposal for a national plan to promote electromobility, an initiative prepared with Ernst & Young (EY) and which has been made available to the authorities with the sole objective of encouraging the growth of this new market for the benefit of all Peruvians and the environment.
