Former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand said “it is time to hand over the baton” from coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to a new commander.
“Today I don’t think we have the level to win the championship,” declared the former defender in his podcast Vibe with Five.
Ferdinand, who played for United between 2002 and 2014, supported the Norwegian coach for a long time. After finishing second last year, this season the team is far from expectations, being thrashed 5-0 at home by Liverpool and defeated 2-0 in the derby against neighbors Manchester City.
“I look at the team every week and wonder what we’re going to do tactically. I don’t see any philosophy or identity in the style of play, which should be the coach’s job,” lamented Ferdinand of a team that was reinforced with Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
“From what I’ve seen since the beginning of the season until now, I think it’s time to pass the baton. I think Ole can start today with his head held high because the path taken from his arrival until the beginning of this season is positive,” he added.
