Truck and van sales in 2022 reached 40% more than in 2019

The sale of trucks and vans, which are considered vehicles specially used in the productive sector, had a significant increase in 2022, compared to 2019, the pre-pandemic year. From January to last December, truck sales were 40% more than in 2019 and those of vans exceeded 36%. This was explained on January 11 by the Association of Automotive Companies of Ecuador (Aeade).

Genaro Baldeón, executive president of the union, explained that productive activities such as construction, agriculture, industry, commerce, among others, require vehicles to transport necessary merchandise or materials. In this sense, the sale of more heavy and light cargo vehicles is a symptom of the country’s economic recovery. Additionally, he vowed that in 2023 this trend would continue.

He also explained that in 2022 a total of 139,517 automotive units (light, heavy) have been sold, representing a 17% growth in sales compared to 2021. This growth was also the most important in the entire region.

When asked about the behavior of the sales of the productive van program launched by the Government in September 2022, he said that there are several operational aspects that make it difficult to apply this Government policy.

He explained that there are several bureaucratic issues both at the Ministry and Customs level that become cumbersome. He commented that at the moment there are 300 approved applications. In any case, he suggested that the Government review the procedures to ensure that the policy is applied more smoothly.

At the moment there are 51 models of trucks that can be purchased under the plan, which specifically allows the excise tax (ICE) to be lowered to 0%. (YO)
