Reddit user Prtafjs, a medical college student interning as a nurse in the Netherlands, mistakenly reprimanded an 89-year-old patient for making a racist comment. The nursing student was checking an intravenous drip and making casual conversation when the elderly woman remarked that black had gone out for a short while.
A Black English man was lying in the bed next to the elderly woman, while another female patient occupied the bed opposite her. The student nurse initially believed the woman was referring to the Black patient leaving the room. After a brief pause, the nurse told the patient that staff and patients do not speak about people in that manner and should not use the word black when referring to Dark-skinned people.
Medical Cable Misunderstanding
The elderly patient looked at the nurse in confusion before explaining her statement. She clarified that the black charging cable for a medical pump had temporarily unplugged from its socket. The nurse acknowledged feeling immediately embarrassed by the mistake.
The 89-year-old woman began laughing loudly at the misunderstanding, and the other female patient in the room joined in. The nurse attempted to apologize and explain her reasoning, but her explanation only caused both patients to laugh harder. Writing online, the nurse asked readers if an 89-year-old grandmother had ever laughed at them, describing the experience as very painful.
