Dominican specialist Dr Merycarla Pichardo Garcia has been officially recognized for participating in the international peer review of a major clinical guideline governing the diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic overactive bladder.
The document was published in 2024 and developed jointly by the American Urological Association and the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction, two leading reference organizations in urology and pelvic floor health.
Pichardo Garcia's contribution is recorded in the official peer reviewers section of the published guide alongside international specialists from several countries. Invited experts evaluated the proposed content, providing observations and comments prior to final publication.
The American Urological Association, founded in 1902, establishes clinical practice guidelines used by physicians worldwide, while the Society of Urodynamics focuses on pelvic floor disorders and bladder function. Idiopathic overactive bladder refers to a condition marked by sudden involuntary bladder contractions where no specific neurological cause or underlying infection is present.
Evidence and clinical review process
The clinical framework aims to provide healthcare professionals with an updated structure for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating non-neurogenic idiopathic overactive bladder.
To establish the recommendations, researchers conducted a systematic review of medical evidence published between January 2013 and November 2023. A total of 159 studies were selected to support the clinical recommendations contained within the guide.
