Donald Trump Tells CNN Reporter to Shut Up in Oval Office

United States President Donald Trump and White House officials lashed out at CNN reporter Kristen Holmes in the Oval Office after she asked about executive assistant Natalie Harp.

The confrontation occurred during an official event honoring a teenage female lifeguard, where the 80-year-old Republican president turned on the reporter as she attempted to ask a question regarding North Korea.

Trump told Holmes that she was a loud and outrageous person, called her fake news, labeled her very disrespectful, and told her to shut up after she pressed him on comments made by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff regarding 35-year-old Harp.

White House reaction and CNN response

The White House Rapid Response team defended the president on the social media platform X, posting that one day Holmes's children would come across her disgusting and inhumane question.

Official White House communications also criticized the reporter for raising the subject during a ceremonial gathering, writing online that the president was hosting a hero lifeguard in the Oval Office when Holmes used it as an opportunity to launch a cheap shot at an aide.

CNN released an official statement in response to the exchange, asserting that the verbal broadsides against their correspondent were below the dignity of the presidential office. The news network, a major American television news organization, added that it stood firmly behind Holmes and rejected the hostility in the strongest possible terms.

Political criticism and background details

The reporter's inquiry stemmed from a Sunday speech delivered by Ossoff, a Democratic United States senator from Georgia and a potential contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. Ossoff accused Trump of wanting to build his ballroom and travel with Harp rather than carrying out his official duties.

Harp has drawn increased public attention following revelations that she was among a select group of aides who accompanied Trump during a secret aircraft swap involving Air Force One, the official presidential plane, on a flight from Turkey in July.

Details regarding her role within the administration were also featured in the book Regime Change, published earlier this year by two journalists from The New York Times. The authors reported that Harp's loyalty extended to writing personal letters to Trump, including one message in which she told the president that he was everything she cared about.
