The chief executives of the two largest banks in the Dominican Republic met to review the outlook for the country's financial system and its role in economic development.
Leonardo Aguilera of Banreservas and Christopher Paniagua of Banco Popular Dominicano agreed that support for small and medium-sized enterprises is a key driver of job creation and economic growth, according to a press release. Both executives said their institutions' credit portfolios for that segment reflect a shared commitment to the sector's development.
The two also discussed backing for entrepreneurs, whose activity they said contributes to economic diversification, a stronger productive base, and new opportunities.
Tourism was also on the agenda. The executives spoke about the sector's economic impact and the role national financial institutions have played in financing projects that support tourism and its supply chain.
The meeting was described as a signal of coordination between the country's leading financial institutions, one that could strengthen confidence among international investors, backed by the country's investment climate and legal certainty.
