Chinese aerospace engineers at the Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute have detailed flight control systems capable of navigating combat jets autonomously if a pilot loses consciousness, according to a research paper published by the South China Morning Post.
The study, led by Zhang Dong, chief designer of flight control systems at the institute, outlines automated flight mechanisms designed to preserve aircraft control during moments of extreme physical load on the pilot. The systems are associated with China's prospective J-50 fighter jet, an advanced aircraft under development to compete with modern combat aviation programs in the United States.
During high-speed aerial maneuvers, fighter pilots can experience severe gravitational acceleration that causes blood to pool away from the brain, leading to a loss of consciousness. The proposed system allows automated flight controls to take over the aircraft when a pilot becomes incapacitated or hand over command during critical tactical situations.
Autonomous Flight and Quantum Navigation
The research team also presented solutions for operating in contested environments where satellite navigation signals are unavailable. Modern combat aircraft rely heavily on space-based navigation networks such as GPS or China's BeiDou system, but electronic warfare can disrupt those signals during military conflicts.
To maintain navigation without satellite coverage, the researchers proposed using quantum technology systems. These quantum sensors allow an aircraft to calculate its position independently, ensuring continuous navigation even when satellite signals are blocked.
The study further highlighted coordination between manned fighters and accompanying groups of uncrewed aerial vehicles. Under the proposed concept, the lead fighter jet coordinates a flexible swarm of companion drones that can alter their structure based on mission requirements, sharing tasks across reconnaissance, offensive strikes, and defense.
Design Details and Generation Competition
Although the published paper does not name the J-50 directly or confirm that all described technologies will be installed on the airframe, military analysts link the findings to Beijing's sixth-generation fighter development. China treats both the J-50 and the J-36 as prospective sixth-generation combat aircraft.
The J-50 designation is an unofficial title for a prospective Chinese fighter that first appeared in test flight imagery in December 2024. Detailed photographs presented by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, which also refer to the aircraft as the J-XDS, show the physical layout of the jet.
The aircraft features twin engines equipped with flat vectoring nozzles to manage engine thrust and stealth profiles. An internal weapons bay for missile and bomb payloads is likely located between the landing gear legs of the aircraft.
