Actor Casey Affleck has revealed that his father, Timothy Affleck, died a few months ago, marking the second parent he and his brother Ben Affleck have lost this year.
Casey shared the news during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival in Italy on Tuesday, September 8, where he was presenting his new movie, Company. He attended the festival alongside his partner, Caylee Cowan, and his two sons, while his brother Ben was also present to support him.
Responding to a question from an Italian journalist during the press conference, Casey explained that he had dedicated Company to his parents because both his mother and father passed away this year. He added that both parents were very important to him and that he had wanted to show them the completed film, but did not get the chance before they died, noting he believed they would have liked it.
Death of Chris Affleck
The announcement follows the death of Casey and Ben's mother, Chris Affleck, who died at the age of 83 on June 2. The family formally announced her passing on July 24.
Timothy Affleck and Chris Affleck divorced when Ben was around 11 or 12 years old.
Timothy Affleck life and career
Background on Timothy Affleck's life had previously been shared by Ben during an interview with The New York Times in 2000. Their father worked as an actor with the Theater Company of Boston, where he shared the stage with performers including Blythe Danner, Robert Duvall, and Dustin Hoffman.
Timothy was also an aspiring playwright and worked various odd jobs over the years while battling alcohol addiction. The New York Times reported in 2000 that Timothy had been sober since 1990 and was working as a counselor at an addiction recovery center in California.
Speaking in 2000, Ben said the most enduring lesson his father taught him was the degree to which a person can turn their life around and alter their habits. In February 2020, Ben told People magazine that his father had reached 30 years of sobriety, describing his father's achievement as the most important lesson of his life.
