Researchers from the University of Alabama have discovered a new eyeless species of cavefish, named Demogorgonichthys arcanus, beneath the Redstone Arsenal military base in Huntsville.
The tiny creature, nicknamed the demon cavefish, grows to just two inches in length, has no skin color, and lives in a single pool inside an underground cave located under the US Army facility.
DNA analysis showed that while the fish is related to other North American cavefish species, it diverged from its nearest relatives approximately 11.6 million years ago. Over millions of years of evolution, the species completely adapted to subterranean life by shedding its eyes and developing specialized sensory organs across its body.
The research team found that the gene normally responsible for eyesight in the fish was severely broken, an evolutionary trait expected in animals living in total darkness. However, scientists were surprised to discover that the creature evolved in the exact same pools alongside the Southern Cavefish, known as Typhlichthys subterraneus, taking a completely different evolutionary path despite sharing the same habitat.
Rare evolutionary discovery in Bobcat Cave
Scientists noted that while independent evolutionary paths among different cavefish species have been documented before, finding a distinct creature adapting in its own unique way inside the same pool as another cavefish is extremely rare.
Dr Matthew Niemiller, associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Alabama, said in a press release: "This is one of the last places we'd have bet on it."
Dr Niemiller added: "Finding an entirely unknown, new genus of freshwater fish in eastern North America today is a little like finding a new kind of big cat. The group is so well known, we thought the big surprises were behind us. To have one turn up in a cave we've watched for three decades is a real reminder to stay curious. It was genuinely surprising."
The research findings, published in Scientific Reports, were based on field observations conducted by the team between 2019 and 2025. Only a handful of individual demon fish were spotted during the six-year observation period.
Chemical contamination and extinction risks
Because Demogorgonichthys arcanus has only been documented in one small aquifer system beneath Redstone Arsenal, researchers consider its restricted habitat extremely fragile. The team reported that the species relies entirely on groundwater, leaving it critically vulnerable to pollution, alterations in water flow, severe droughts, and flooding.
Niemiller and his team warned that these environmental threats render the demon cavefish critically imperiled and possibly a critically endangered species.
The location of the cave beneath Redstone Arsenal initially provided the fish with a degree of protection from extinction, as strict military security prevented commercial development and public access from destroying the site.
However, field sampling revealed that the aquatic habitat inside Bobcat Cave remains contaminated with hazardous chemical residues. In their published study, the research team wrote: "Trace metals, including cadmium, chromium, and lead, have been detected at elevated concentrations in water samples from Bobcat Cave over the past two decades."
According to Niemiller's team, the most likely reason for the pollution is that Bobcat Cave sits directly under an old industrial part of Redstone Arsenal, where the US Army historically disposed of conventional explosives and chemical munitions. Over time, hazardous compounds appear to have slowly leaked into the underground water flowing into the cave.
Toxicological data indicates that cadmium, chromium, and lead pose severe health risks to aquatic life even in small concentrations. Lead serves as the main metal in most bullets and projectiles, while lead compounds have been used in primers that initiate explosions when a trigger is pulled. Meanwhile, chromium and cadmium were used by the military as protective plating to resist rust and corrosion.
Redstone Arsenal history and UFO lore
Established in 1941 to support the US during World War II, Redstone Arsenal has expanded into a major military and space hub. The facility currently supports a workforce of more than 45,000 military personnel, civilian employees, and contractors.
According to a government fact sheet about the installation: "The installation is the birthplace of NASA and has grown to include more than 65 diverse and distinct organizations."
The installation has also been referred to as Alabama's Area 51, a nickname tied to its history of classified research into missiles, rockets, and space-related technology. The base's newest task, becoming the official home for US Space Command, has revived decades-old UFO conspiracy theories tied to Redstone Arsenal.
Just one month after US Space Command officially transferred its operations to Redstone, unproven allegations began spreading online claiming that non-human craft held at Area 51 in Nevada were being moved to Alabama.
Speculation surrounding the site was previously highlighted in 2020 by Amy Eskridge, a researcher working on anti-gravity technology in Huntsville. During an interview, Eskridge claimed that the source of UFO and alien disclosure would be Redstone Arsenal.
Eskridge, who died in 2022, said: "Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama is the biggest f****** deal that you've never heard of."
