Hiking trails in the Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne are being worn away by erosion, park authorities and environmental police say.
The park draws more than two million visitors every year to what is described as a landscape unique in France. Officials say that with so many people passing through, each footstep gradually crumbles the trails and eats away at the volcanic soil beneath them.
Stronger protection measures
Environmental police and local authorities have strengthened protective measures at the site. They are working to ensure that hikers follow the rules put in place to limit damage to the trails.
