The automated dispenser provides free packages of Narcan, a drug used to treat opioid overdoses, along with test strips designed to detect the presence of the synthetic opioid fentanyl. It also contains free COVID-19 tests and personal hygiene products for women.
Annapolis is the state capital of Maryland. Narcan is a brand name for naloxone, an emergency treatment that rapidly reverses opioid overdoses, while fentanyl test strips allow drug users to check substances for trace amounts of dangerous synthetic opioids before consumption.
An American Reddit user with the username Rasputin_mad_monk posted a photograph of the machine online, explaining that all items listed inside were available at no cost to visitors. The poster stated that he viewed the automated machine as a useful and important public service.

One commenter questioned what kind of run-down area a person must live in for vending machines stocking Narcan and fentanyl tests to be considered in demand or socially beneficial. Another writer expressed hope that children were not allowed anywhere near the installation.
