Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie plans to spend most of her time outside the United States after her youngest children reached adulthood.
The 51-year-old filmmaker announced her decision following the 18th birthday of her twins, Vivienne and Knox, in July 2026.
Jolie shares six adult children with her former husband, actor Brad Pitt, whom she separated from in 2016 before finalising their divorce in 2024. In addition to 18-year-old Vivienne and Knox, the former couple are parents to Maddox, 25, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, and Shiloh, 20.
Plans for a Nomadic Lifestyle
Speaking in an interview with L'Officiel to mark the development of her creative house, Atelier Jolie, the actress explained that her children growing up marked the end of a specific period in her life.
When asked if she intended to relocate to New York City rather than remaining in Los Angeles, where she has been based for many years, Jolie said she expected to live mostly outside the United States.
She clarified that she does not intend to maintain a single permanent base, choosing instead to travel while keeping one central family property.
Jolie said she would like to keep a home that serves as the base for her family, holding items connected to motherhood and family photographs, while living more nomadically for a period.
Expansion of Atelier Jolie and Global Work
Her international plans include expanding Atelier Jolie, the fashion and art collective she launched to support creative artisans. The expansion will begin in Brazil before extending to various locations around the world, where she plans to meet local artists and creators.
In addition to her business ventures, Jolie stated she will continue her humanitarian work with the United Nations, travelling to support refugees globally. Jolie previously served as a Special Envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
She also detailed the ongoing evolution of the Maddox Foundation, her Cambodia-based non-profit organisation focused on environmental conservation and community development.
The foundation is named after her eldest son, Maddox, whom she adopted from Cambodia in 2002. Jolie noted that her residence in Cambodia will operate for several months each year as a dedicated host space for Khmer art and culture.
Sale of California Estate
In May 2026, Jolie officially placed her historic California estate on the market for $29.85 million. The expansive property in Los Angeles was previously owned by legendary Hollywood director Cecil B. DeMille.
A source close to the actress told People magazine in July 2026 that Jolie had spoken for years about her desire to leave Los Angeles. Following a report published by People on September 9, 2026, details of her planned move gained widespread attention.
The source added that with all six children now of age, Jolie felt ready to explore the world alongside them and leave her California routine behind, noting that she was happy to gain greater freedom and flexibility in her life.
Reflections on Leaving Los Angeles
Jolie previously indicated her desire to move in an August 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. At the time, she explained that despite growing up in Los Angeles, she remained in the city solely because her divorce agreement required her presence there until her children reached adulthood.
She noted in 2024 that once Knox and Vivienne turned 18, she would finally be able to relocate. She observed that raising a large family requires privacy, peace, and security, adding that the sense of humanity she experienced around the world differed from her upbringing in California.
Jolie confirmed at the time that after leaving Los Angeles, she would divide her time between Cambodia and visiting her children and family members wherever they live across the globe.
