Ilida Crime Prosecution and Investigation Department officers arrested a man in Amaliada on August 8 following an attempted fraud against an elderly woman. Police formed a case file against the suspect alleging fraud, theft, bodily harm, and violence against officers and judicial figures.
Authorities reported that the accused and an unidentified accomplice called the elderly resident in the Ilida area on Saturday afternoon. Pretending to be accountants, the callers claimed the woman needed to replace the cash on her bank cards and instructed her to place her money in a bag outside her house.
The woman did not believe the callers and recognized the scam. She contacted the police, who instructed her to leave a bag containing fake money at a location near her home.
Sting operation and pursuit
The suspect arrived at the home as a passenger in a vehicle driven by his accomplice to retrieve the bag. Officers moved in and arrested the passenger immediately, despite his physical resistance during the arrest. Police searched the suspect and seized two mobile phones in his possession.
During the arrest, the driver of the car attempted to ram police officers with the vehicle before fleeing the scene. Officers remain engaged in an ongoing search to identify, locate, and arrest the driver.
Stolen license plates
A preliminary investigation by the Ilida Crime Prosecution and Investigation Department revealed that the suspects had previously stolen state license plates from a parked car in Gastouni. The perpetrators attached the stolen plates to the vehicle used during the fraud attempt.
The arrested man will be brought before the Prosecutor of the First Instance Court of Ilia at the parallel seat of Amaliada.
