Dominican President Luis Abinader inaugurated a covered sports court complex in Cambita Garabito on Sunday, September 13, in a project officials say will benefit more than 700 students in the community.
The facility, built with an investment exceeding 26 million pesos, will allow students to take part in sports, cultural activities, school events and other recreational experiences in improved conditions, according to authorities.
Abinader was joined at the inauguration by Education Minister Luis Miguel De Camps, who said the sports center would help students and young people in the community discover and develop their abilities in different areas.
Minister's remarks
De Camps said every student has abilities that need opportunities to be discovered and developed. He said some of those abilities are found in mathematics, science or technology, while others are found in art, music or sport, and that a good education opens space for all of those possibilities.
The minister called on students to make the most of the facilities and their time in school to improve their academic performance and physical condition.
De Camps said sports practice helps develop skills linked to consistency, preparation, effort, responsibility and teamwork, which help prepare young people to face challenges inside and outside the classroom.
He stressed that every day of the current school year counts and should translate into better learning outcomes and the overall development of each student.
Student reaction
Yohanny Alejandra Vega Ceballo, a fifth-year secondary school student, spoke on behalf of her classmates. She thanked officials for the new facility and said the space would allow students to develop their talents, practice sports and strengthen ties with the community.
Background on the president's visit
San Cristobal is a province in southern Dominican Republic. Abinader, who has served as the country's president since 2020, has continued a series of public works inaugurations across the region.
What's next
Abinader had other activities planned in San Cristobal that Sunday, including the inauguration of a childcare center, known locally as an Estancia Infantil, in the community of Canastica.
He was also due to hold a meeting and lunch with 450 young students from polytechnic high schools and private schools to hear their concerns, perspectives and aspirations regarding their education and professional futures.
Another event on the president's schedule was the inauguration of a covered court facility in El Carril.
