A surveillance drone operated by Frontex spotted a vessel carrying approximately 71 migrants in the Mediterranean Sea early on Wednesday morning, 26 August. The boat was located in the sea area roughly 15 nautical miles south of the town of Ierapetra.
Following the detection, a passing commercial tanker flying the flag of Malta responded to the scene and safely picked up all the migrants from the dinghy. Maritime authorities directed the vessel to transport the group to the port of Kali Limenes on the southern coast of Crete.

Sea conditions during the early morning operation were calm, with clear weather and northwesterly winds measuring force 3 on the Beaufort scale. The light breeze provided favorable conditions for the tanker to approach the vessel and bring the passengers aboard.
