Media: EU diplomats are considering resigning from the ban on Russian oil imports. “Dangerous precedent”

The sixth package of sanctions against Russia has still not been approved by the EU. The problem is the total ban on Russian oil imports. The embargo is blocked primarily by Hungary. That is why, as he reports, there was an idea in Brussels to exclude the oil issue from the latest package.

The EU will give up blocking Russian oil imports?

– In fact, there is an idea to separate the package of sanctions, because there is consent for 90 percent. its components. We are moving forward with everything except oil – said one of the EU diplomats in an interview with the service. – It is frustrating that we cannot move forward with the topics that are approved. So why not adopt a pragmatic solution and continue the discussion on energy? – he adds.

There is no certainty that the oil issue will be “taken” out of the sanctions package. In an interview with the Brussels correspondent of Polish Radio, Beata Płomecka, the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell explained it. – It will be a dangerous precedent and a sign of the EU’s weakness – he said.

The sixth package of sanctions includes, in addition to the oil embargo, the Russian bank Sberbank, which is to be disconnected from the global financial settlement system SWIFT. In addition, more people are to be subject to restrictions. This time, Alina Kabaeva, the mother of Vladimir Putin’s children, and Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, are to be blacklisted with a ban on entry to the EU and blocked assets in Europe.

Hungary wants money to move away from oil

Another scenario is possible. Hungary has officially announced that it wants between 500 million and 750 million euros to disconnect from the Russian pipeline and connect to the Croatian one.

However, this is too much – as you can hear in Brussels. Especially since there are technical possibilities to transport oil to Hungary via the Adriatic pipeline. – The European Commission will have to recalculate it, lest it miss out on bribing them – one of the EU diplomats told Beata Płomecka.
