Sweden and Finland will be at the NATO summit in Madrid next June. This was confirmed on Tuesday Pedro Sanchez from the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he has shown his strong support for the accession to the Atlantic Alliance of both Nordic countries, which he has defined as “very consolidated democracies”.
“We are going to welcome two new countries in NATO and of course I believe that this is also very important for the stability of the European Union and for the future of NATO”, defended the President of the Government. Asked if both countries would be at the summit, he answered without hesitation: “Yes, of course.”
The capital will host the next NATO summit on June 29 and 30, a meeting that Sánchez hopes will result in greater unity between the EU and the Alliance. As he has reported, his government is organizing an informal dinner between European leaders, whether or not they belong to the military organization, and those of NATO.
Sánchez has also assured that among the allies there is a feeling favorable to the incorporation of these two countries and has expressed that Spain is willing to speed up the entire parliamentary process national to become a reality.
Erdogan’s veto
Finland and Sweden have already submitted their application to join NATOa membership that has the Turkish oppositionwhose president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has called for “concrete steps” to lift that veto.
However, the Turkish president has not specified what measures he expects to approve his accession to the Atlantic Alliance, and has once again attacked both countries for considering that they protect the Kurdish-Syrian militias, the People’s Protection Units (YPG), considered terrorists by Ankara.
“Those who support terrorist groups and protect the terrorists who are threats to Turkey must abandon their arrogant, illegal and insincere attitude”, he has asserted in the last hours.
