At least seven soldiers were killed today in an attack by unidentified armed men on a military detachment in Madjoari, a town in eastern Burkina Fasoconfirmed sources from the security forces and residents of the town.
According to security sources told local media, the attackers arrived in large numbers and fired at the detachment.
The provisional balance of the attack is at least seven dead soldiers and significant material damagesaid these sources, adding that the assailants also took various material before setting fire to the military post.
Local residents confirmed the attack to Efe. “It was early in the morning when the soldiers were attacked,” Issaka Dahani explained by telephone, indicating that the attack was attributed to a terrorist group operating in the area, without specifying which one.
“We heard the shots, but no one came out. During the day, we saw dead bodies and the Army came later, but the terrorists had already left,” added Dahani.
Madjoari is located in Kompienga, a province where in April 2021 two Spanish journalists and an Irish citizen were killed by terrorists when they were embedded in a patrol of Burkina Faso troops against poaching while doing a report.
Last week, 17 civilians, including three disabled people and a womanwere also killed in Madjori, the resident said.
“They had gone in search of food (…). We thought that the military could protect us, but we realize that it is not possible,” said Dahani.
“The situation has not improved at all. Apart from terrorist attacks, even hunger is killing people. We cried out for the government to send food, but nothing,” she added.
Likewise, a 15-year-old boy died and eleven people were injured today in an attack by unidentified armed men on a bus in Seytenga, a northern town 40 kilometers from Dori, the capital of the Sahel region and about 10 kilometers from the border with Niger, reported the Burkina Faso Information Agency (AIB).
Burkina Faso has suffered frequent jihadist attacks since April 2015, perpetrated by groups linked to both Al Qaeda and the Islamic State.
The region hardest hit by insecurity is the Sahel (north), which shares a border with Mali and Niger, although jihadism has also spread to other neighboring areas, and, since 2018, to the eastern region of the country.
In November 2021, an attack on a Gendarmerie post caused 53 deaths (49 gendarmes and 4 civilians), which generated great social discontent that led to strong protests demanding the resignation of the then Burkinabe president, Roch Kaboré.
A few months later, on January 24, the military seized power in a coup – the fourth in West Africa since August 2020 – and deposed the president.
Insecurity has caused the number of internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso to rise to more than 1.85 million people, according to government data. (I)
