Bolivia identified a sustained increase in Covid-19 cases

Bolivia registered the penultimate week a daily average of 390.3 cases; the penultimate of 466.4 cases and in the last of 555.8 cases.

Bolivia has registered a sustained increase in COVID-19 infections in recent weeks, Health Minister Jeyson Auza reported on Monday, although the official data on deaths are fluctuating.

Auza pointed out in a press conference that three of the nine departments of the country stand out in the increase: Santa Cruz (east), Cochabamba (center) and Chuquisaca (southeast).

“The sustained increase for several weeks of covid cases occurs in three departments: Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and Chuquisaca”, which had an impact on the national data.

Bolivia registered the penultimate week a daily average of 390.3 cases; the penultimate of 466.4 cases and the last of 555.8 cases, according to official data.

Although infections are increasing, the data on the deceased are fluctuating: in the third to last week the daily average of deaths was 4.14, in the penultimate it was 9.57 and in the last week it was 3.86.

The official also specified that based on the data recorded, “today we must inform the Bolivian people that in Bolivia we have started the fourth wave” and that “the fourth wave means a sustained increase in cases for more than 3 and 4 weeks.”

Bolivia registered a first wave of the pandemic between July and August 2020, a second between December of last year and January 2021 and a third between last May and June.

Auza indicated that the government is taking measures to face this fourth wave, such as the distribution of public funds to the regions for the purchase of medicines and to continue with immunization efforts.

“If we continue with an aggressive vaccination plan, we will keep the pandemic in the controlled indicators that we have achieved to date,” he said.

A total of 3.6 million people received the first dose of the anticovid vaccine, 2.9 million the second and more than 329,430 a third. Additionally, 934,538 received a single dose of the Janssen vaccine.

The country estimates to complete the immunization of 7.5 million inhabitants, over 16 years of age, by the end of the year.

With a population of 11.5 million inhabitants, Bolivia accumulates more than 513,810 infected and more than 18,920 deaths from covid. (I)
