The explosion occurred minutes before 11:00 yesterday (local time) -5:00 p.m. in Euskal Herria-, when a tanker truck served liquefied gas to the Saratoga hotel.
In it inside of the hotel there was only one team of employeeswho worked in the set-up of the property for its reopening on May 10, after being closed for two years due to the pandemic.
Students evacuated and 23 buildings damaged
The children of the school next to the hotel facility, with more than 390 students, were evacuated after the explosion and taken to their relatives. Among the students there are at least five wounded, according to the Cuban media.
Due to the explosion, at least 23 buildings in the area have been damagedincluding 17 blocks of flats, two of which have been severely affected structurally.
The President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canelhas traveled to the scene of the event accompanied by the Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero and the president of the National Assembly of Cuba, Stephen Lazowhich has confirmed that “indeed it was not a bomb or an attack”, but an “unfortunate accident”.
The Cuban Presidency has disseminated several photographs through social networks in which the president can be seen at the scene of the events, as well as in health centers in the area, where he has visited some of the wounded.
