The nationalist Sinn Féin party is on its way to becoming the first force of the British province of Northern Ireland, thereby ending a hundred years of unionist rule. It would be a historical turn that, if fulfilled, would bring closer the previously remote possibility of a united ireland.
The first results of the regional elections in Northern Ireland point to a historic victory for the nationalist Sinn Féin and confirm the division of unionism, which will boycott the formation of a power-sharing government if there is no progress on the post-Brexit status of the province.
For the time being, a Sinn Féin victory would not change the status of the region, as the required referendum to leave the UK falls under the purview of the British government, and could be years away.
“I feel very positive, I think we have run a very positive campaign,” declared its leader in the region, Michelle O’Neill, who, if she wins, will stand for the post of chief minister, a position never held by a nationalist politician.
According to latest polls published this week, Sinn Féin would obtain around 26% of the first preference votes, ahead of the still majority Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), to which they grant 19%.
