Greece records record of coronavirus cases in a single day

The number of intubated patients also continued to rise, with 430, 26 more than on Saturday and 76 more than a week ago.

Greece today broke its record of COVID-19 infections in one day by registering 5,449 cases in one day, the highest number of the entire pandemic.

This record is well above the previous one, reported last Saturday, when 4,696 infections occurred.

Of the 5,449 cases registered today, more than a thousand were located in the capital region of Attica and more than 800 in Thessaloniki, the second largest city in the country, where the situation is especially delicate due to the almost complete occupation of intensive care units.

In addition, among all the cases reported in the last week, only 2,662 have been traced and related to an already known contagion.

According to data published by the National Public Health Organization (EODY), 52 people died in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 15,990.

The total number of confirmed cases amounts to 747,595.

On the last day, 82,593 tests were carried out in Greece, which gave a 6.6% positivity rate.

The number of intubated patients also continued to rise, with 430, 26 more than on Saturday and 76 more than a week ago.

The Hellenic Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, called two extraordinary meetings today in anticipation of this record and the Government is expected to announce new measures in the coming days, especially focused on the unvaccinated population and the areas of the country with the worst epidemiological situation.

Mitsotakis has reiterated in recent months that he has no intention of reimposing a lockdown or other horizontal restrictive measures that affect the entire population because the Greek economy cannot afford it.

However, the vaccination campaign has been stagnant since the summer and just over 60% of the population has received the complete guideline. (I)
