Study warns of the scarce labor insertion of young Ibero-Americans

80% of Ibero-American youth do not have profiles compatible with the most competitive jobs, according to a report prepared by the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), which warns of the low labor insertion of the youth of the region.

The study collects statistical data from 11 countries – Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic – and addresses other aspects such as the gender gap, the quality of employment or the Obstacles for young Ibero-Americans to undertake.

According to the report, young people in the countries analyzed face serious problems of labor insertion, presenting the lowest participation rates compared to the population average, and also unemployment, to the point of reaching the highest figure since the they keep records because of the pandemic.

Another of the conclusions, as highlighted by the OEI in a statement, is the existence of a marked gender gap, with youth employment rates 25% lower among women compared to men.

Youth employment in the region also faces another problem, the risk of technological substitution, since, according to the study, the most characteristic jobs for youth are related to manual and routine tasks.

In this way, Latin American and Caribbean countries face the challenge of generating jobs for a growing labor supply in the coming decades.

In this sense, the report incorporates public policy recommendations to solve the labor situation in the region, among which the adaptation of academic content to the reality of the labor market stands out.

It also insists on the importance of promoting more practical studies, in which they alternate between academics and companies, in order to reduce the gap between the knowledge acquired and that which they will use in their future work. (I)
