Famous tennis player, six-time Grand Slam winner Boris Becker has been sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for hiding assets worth hundreds of thousands of pounds after he was declared bankrupt. The corresponding decision was taken by the Royal Court of Southwark in London, according to Reuters.
Becker was accused of failing to declare real estate in Germany, concealing a bank loan of 825,000 euros ($871,000) and shares in a Canadian technology firm. In addition, the tennis player was found guilty of transferring money to his ex-wife Barbara and his current wife Charlie, with whom he lives separately after the bankruptcy that occurred in 2017. In the process, Becker was acquitted of 20 other counts, including allegations that he hid other assets, including two Wimbledon trophies and an Olympic gold medal.
In a jury trial, Becker claimed he did not know the whereabouts of some of his trophies since he took out a high-interest loan, denied the charges against him, and claimed to have the diplomatic protection of the Central African Republic.
Becker had previously been convicted of tax evasion in Germany in 2002, for which he received a suspended prison sentence.
