One dead and 15 injured in the explosion of a gas pipeline in an oil company in Mexico

The detonation took place on a site where there was a tanker authorized to remove about 10,000 liters of liquefied gas.

A clandestine seizure of a gas pipeline by the state oil company Pemex left at least one dead and 15 injured on Sunday in the central Mexican state of Puebla, reported the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“It is unfortunate that one person has lost his life so far, and fifteen more have been injured, due to the explosion of a Pemex pipeline in Puebla,” said the president on his social networks.

According to López Obrador, the events took place at 2.30 local time (8.30 GMT) and 1,396 elements from all the civil protection corporations were mobilized to address the situation.

The president assured that the state oil company already “has control of the fire and will ensure that the families evicted from their homes remain safe.”

At a press conference, local authorities explained that the explosion was due to a clandestine gas intake in the San Pablo Xochimehuacan area, in the city of Puebla, capital of the homonymous state.

The detonation took place on a site where there was a tanker authorized to remove about 10,000 liters of liquefied gas.

The governor of Puebla, Miguel Barbosa, assured that “the first to be implicated” are the owner of the property and the owner of the tanker, and promised that the situation “will not go unpunished.”

Adán Molina, a resident of San Pablo Xochimehuacan, told Efe that he evicted his house after hearing a series of detonations.

“The very loud explosions were heard and the floor shook and everything, and we heard how many glass shattered, so we hurried to leave the place,” he said.

On January 18, 2019, the municipality of Tlahuelilpan, in the central Mexican state of Hidalgo, captured international attention due to the explosion that occurred in a Pemex pipeline, which left 137 dead and dozens injured.

The explosion occurred when hundreds of neighbors took advantage of a leak in an oil pipeline to steal gasoline, just after the president had declared a frontal fight against this practice, known in Mexico as huachicol. (I)
