More than 840 Venezuelan families from three municipalities in the western state of Zulia -border with Colombia- were affected since yesterday, after the breakage of the retaining wall of a river, due to the heavy rains that have occurred in the west of the country, reported this Monday the Minister of the Interior, Remigio Ceballos.
The official indicated that, by order of the president Nicholas Madurothe authorities have supplied the communities with food, drinking water, medicine, mattresses, sheets, blankets and matches, through an operation in which firefighters, the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) and citizen security agencies participated.
assured that the flood affected more than 20,000 hectares dedicated to agricultural and livestock activitiesso they maintain “contact” with agricultural producers in the areas.
Ceballos indicated that a comprehensive command post was established to serve the families and that patrol work has been carried out in different sectors to guide the populations to be prepared and “Attentive to the possible increase in rains.”
“We maintain direct, meteorological surveillance, thanks to all the systems that we have been perfecting and we have been working on. (…) The call is for prevention and alertness, especially in the area of Zulia, the Andes, the western, central, and north-central Llanos as well”, he added.
For his part, the governor of Zulia, Manuel Rosales, maintained that “It is important to present to national agencies the need to deepen maintenance, such as dredging of river beds and mouths, maintenance and construction of retaining walls for tributaries”.
He pointed out that the government reinforced actions to serve “more than 500 affected families and control the rivers with machinery and personnel from the agencies and mayors.” (I)
