American Airlines cancels 1,500 flights in three days due to lack of staff

The largest American airline, American Airlines, this Sunday canceled another 634 flights, representing a total of 1,500 cancellations since Friday as a result of lack of personnel, to which weather problems have been added.

According to figures from the FlightAware page, which tracks flights, the 634 flights canceled this Sunday account for a quarter of all those scheduled for that day.

“With the problems over time, we begin to run short of staff when crew members are left out of their regular sequence of flights,” explained American Airlines in a statement sent to CNN.

According to the company, two days of strong winds in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where its central airport is located, have drastically reduced landings.

On Friday, American Airlines canceled 342 flights, with a further 543 on Saturday.

The airline notably cut its workforce in 2020 due to the reduction in flight volume with the coronavirus pandemic.

As they try to rehire employees, interruptions in their services have been frequent, something that has also suffered other airlines such as Southwest, which in early October had to cancel more than 2,000 flights in a single weekend.
